Corner Weight.... Ideal set up?
Hi all
OK, at least I started with a good post to get back in the swing of things (see here: http://www.openpitlane.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=12813). So, we are now at the closing stages of building the FUBINATOR, and I am looking to you for some assistance please. We have bought some corner weight scales, we have racked the car on them and have managed to shed over 300kgs from it which is great. But now we are left with the actual fine tuning of the suspension, and this is where I need your help. We currently have this as the corner weight: ![]() The car is obviously front wheel drive, and hence there is little to no weight over the back of it. At the moment it is a roughly 65/35 split front to rear. What is the optimum for a front wheeled drive car? I know we will have to do some cross balencing here, and I am hoping that there is sufficient fine adjustment in the coil overs to allow me to even the car up, but what about front to back. Is there any merit in backing the back springs off and stiffening the front springs in an attempt to bring some of the weight backwards? Or do we have to add ballast to even things out? Or is this normal and perfectly fine for an FWD car. Trying to find out some information on this, been having a look around at touring car weight set-ups but can't seem to find anything useful........ Your suggestions and experience gladly taken at this point. -=F=-

Not yet, and I am not insubstantial (weighing in at 20st! The joys of being an ex-rugby player).

equal weight on each corner is the optimum
don't add balast unless you are racing and have min weight rules if you want some bias do this with rake angle but keep weights even - usually the rear slightly higher than the front to aid weight transfer under braking is desirable

You need to corner weight with you or your weight in the drivers seat. Diagonals should be equal. Split I am not sure on for a FWD car.

My first observation was on the imbalance on the right hand side. If you're 20 stone, that's 127KG, which will mean that with you in the car, you end up with about 100KG more on the right side of the car.

![]() Its ok - he has already spoken to Chris @ CG, was looking over the info today... Sadly - production cars arent really built with corner weighting in mind, whereas a Porsche is. The only way really is to physically move weight around, but obviously you are limited to what you can physically do. Thing is, front rear split in a FWD car is always going to be "wrong" but look at all the hot hatches out there. You just have to drive around it. However, you do want the left right wedge the same... |
